Rain Washed River Rocks in Crofton
A very rainy winter has made hounding along rivers particularly treacherous this year. Until the water levels recede a bit, it’s best to try some ‘dryer’ sites. Some members have taken to picking through wash outs on old logging roads, and scouting out river rock dump sites such as this one.
We headed out to Crofton today for a quick, low-key wander. There’s been local talk about rock hauled up from the Chemainus River, and sure enough there were piles sitting near Richard Creek, up toward Crofton Lake. It’s an easy walk in past the gate and well worth a look when the rivers are running too high to safely rockhound.

A proper Wet coast winter downpour in the morning didn’t lend it’s self to a huge turn out. The upside? The rain did a great job washing everything clean!
We found lots of really nice banded chert in a whole range of colours, with bright jasper showing through and some lovely pieces of flowerstone too.

Small turnout, wet boots, and some great finds — all in all, a solid little club outing for those that braved the rain.

Digging through the old hard drive and found this in one of the meeting minutes from a few years ago!
Sandy suggested a field trip to Maple Mountain near Crofton. There has been a lot of Chemainus River rock moved up to what used to be the Crofton Dump. It is only a short walk up a dirt road to the Pile. There is parking along the road near the entrance as well as on the other side at the Maple Mountain.
Pretty cool there’s still so many good rocks there after 2+ years…
